Response from Arnold Schwarzenegger on California CTE

Posted on February 21, 2008. Filed under: Trade and Industrial Education Division |

I just checked my school email, and lo and behold a return email from the Governor’s office of the great state of California. I wanted to pass it onto you because Governor Schwarzenegger outlines his proposed educational budget for 2008-2009. Although the $55.8 million for CTE continuing enhancements is lower than our Pennsylvania proposed budget, the voter approved $500 million investment into new up-to-date facilities shows great positive perception and appreciation by Californians for the future of CTE.Way to go California!

Thank you for writing to me about Career Technical Education (CTE).  I value your input on issues that affect the future of California’s schools. As Governor, I am committed to providing successful career opportunities and options for all of our students.  I recognize that CTE is an integral part of preparing for the state’s growing economy and workforce needs.  CTE offers a valuable course of study that integrates rigorous academics with technical and occupational courses that provide students with multiple pathways to success.

My proposed 2008-09 budget allocates $55.8 million to continue enhancing and improving CTE.  This money will support programs in middle schools, high schools and community colleges.  It will build stronger partnerships between businesses and schools, increase student internships and create career-themed high schools.

I am also pleased that the voters of our great state approved $500 million to build CTE facilities throughout California.  The investment in modern and up-to-date facilities communicates to students that we value CTE and their education.  Again, thank you for taking the time to write.  I appreciate your involvement and input on furthering opportunities for all students.

Sincerely,

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Wow! The $500 million for new facilities sounds great. I wonder how the $55.8 million compares with previous California CTE budgets? Does anyone know?

In response to Ron, I believe last year was at $52 million. I also read on the Internet that in his first term, Gov. Schwarzenegger increased CTE funding by 18 percent.
